What is a 'High resolution photo"?
Photos pulled from any online platforms (such as Facebook) are not high resolution. The following articles explain what high resolution is, and why it’s so important:
IMPORTANT: If you wish to have the background removed from a photo, or have it edited in any way, it must be high resolution. Low resolution photos are very difficult to work with, and won’t look good in a print advertisement. You want your design to look it’s best!
How can I tell if my photo is a high enough resolution?
Common resolution needs:
• Web: Roughly 100 ppi at display size. (72 to 96)
• Newspapers: 200 ppi at ACTUAL SIZE*
• Magazines, brochures, etc.: 300 ppi at ACTUAL SIZE*
• Large format displays (such as billboards): 100 ppi at ACTUAL SIZE*
Common file sizes for jpgs:
• A small head shot (1.5 x 1.75″) needs to be at least 450 x 525 pixels. If your file size is less than about 850K, it may not be big enough.
•. A 4×6 photo (1/4 page) needs to be at least 1200 x 1800 pixels. If your file size is less than 2MB, it may not be big enough.
•. A full magazine page (8.5” x 11″) needs to be at least 300 x 4400 pixels. If your file size is less than 6-7MB, it may not be big enough.
Note: The file sizes above mean the size AFTER cropping.
What should I include with my ad design order?
1. High resolution (previously unedited) photos
2. Please type all desired information into one e-mail or a word doc and include the following:
• Your dog’s registered and call name, Sire and Dam info (if desired).
• Breeder/Owner/Handler info, contact info (if desired).
• If you want a headline, tag line, quote, stats, thanks to Judges.
• Include everything you want to say. Keep in mind (especially in small online ads) that less is definitely more, and no one will read a novel. :)
3. If you have a logo you want included , please attach it in as high resolution as possible - .png, .SVG, or .pdf format (with a transparent background).
4. If we are creating a litter announcement or any ad where you want a pedigree included, please send that as well, in a file format that can be copied and pasted from. This saves me having to re-type it all from scratch.
5. Please tell me about any colours, fonts or layout preferences you may have. If you have a pre-defined layout or design in mind, please make sure to note that, as it makes it easier to nail your vision if you share that with me.
6. Should you have a preference about which of your photos are the ‘featured one’, please advise me.
How should I send my information and photos to you?
• e-mail or large file transfer link from Hightail, We Transfer, Google Drive, icloud, or similar platform only please!
• Delivery via messenger or text looses resolution and will not be accepted.
• You can contact me by email if you feel you would benefit from filling out an order form, and I can send one to you.
